newsFusion 1.0
newsFusion is an NVDA add-on that provides a fast, keyboard-driven UK news feed with a clean, distraction-free article view.
It is inspired by the workflow of wikiFusion: quick to open, quick to read, and easy to navigate with NVDA.
Key features
- Top Stories merged view across enabled sources
- De-duplication (removes tracking parameters and duplicate links)
- Clean article text (strips HTML from feed summaries; Guardian can optionally load full text via API)
- Custom feeds (add, edit, remove, and reorder RSS/Atom sources)
- Sounds for refresh, success, and error states (optional)
Opening newsFusion
Default gesture:
NVDA + Shift + W
You can remap this (and any other gestures) in NVDA Menu → Preferences → Input Gestures….
Keyboard shortcuts
| Shortcut | Action |
| NVDA+Shift+W | Open newsFusion |
| Enter | Load the selected story into the article viewer |
| Ctrl+Enter | Open the selected story in your browser |
| Alt+O | Open the current (loaded) story in your browser, or the selected story if none is loaded |
| F5 | Refresh feeds |
| Esc | Close the dialog (hides it; content is preserved until you clear or refresh) |
Main window layout
Filter box
Type a word or phrase and press Enter in the filter box to narrow results.
Selection on search: When a filter is active, newsFusion focuses the most relevant Top Stories result automatically.
Sources tree
The sources tree contains:
- Top Stories (expanded by default)
- One bucket per source (BBC / Sky / Guardian and any custom feeds)
Expansion behavior: Only Top Stories is expanded automatically. All other sources remain collapsed until you expand them manually (wikiFusion-style).
Article viewer
The article viewer shows clean text from the feed (HTML stripped). For Guardian links, you can optionally use the Guardian Content API to retrieve fuller text.
Settings
Open: NVDA Menu → Preferences → Settings → News Fusion
General
- Enable sounds – plays sounds for refresh/success/error
- Refresh feeds when opening the dialog – automatically refresh on open
- Remove duplicate stories – de-duplicates across sources (recommended)
- Max items per feed – limits how many items are loaded per source
- Top Stories size – limits how many items appear in Top Stories
Guardian full text (optional)
- Guardian Content API key – if set, Guardian stories can load fuller article text
- Prefer Guardian API for Guardian article text – uses the API when available
Built-in sources
You can enable/disable the built-in UK sources (BBC, Sky, Guardian).
Custom sources
You can add your own RSS/Atom feeds.
- Use Add… to add a feed URL (name is optional).
- If you leave the name blank, newsFusion attempts to detect it automatically from the feed title.
- You can edit, remove, and reorder feeds using the buttons provided.
Notes
- Some feeds only provide a summary rather than full article text. In those cases, use Ctrl+Enter or Alt+O to open the full story in your browser.
- If a feed fails to refresh, the error will be shown in the article viewer.
